Multicultural Communication Patterns in Improving Sakinah Family Insight Through Pre-Marriage Guidance For Prospective Brides And Groom at The KUA of Rantepao District, North Toraja Regency

Abstract

This study aims to analyze patterns of multicultural communication in fostering a harmonious family through premarital counseling for intercultural couples at the Religious Affairs Office (KUA) of Rantepao Subdistrict, North Toraja Regency. The study was motivated by the diversity of North Toraja society, which encourages interethnic and intercultural marriages. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of three BIMTEK-certified facilitators and five engaged couples from the Toraja, Sunda, Bugis, and Javanese ethnic groups. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that marriage counseling was conducted through four main topics: Foundations of a Harmonious Family, Building a Harmonious Family, Meeting Family Needs, and Family Psychology. Multicultural communication patterns were applied through the use of simple and inclusive Indonesian, Islamic communication principles, and verbal and nonverbal approaches that took into account the participants’ cultural diversity. The application of these patterns enhanced the engaged couples’ understanding of effective communication as the foundation of a harmonious family. The challenges encountered included language barriers, cultural misunderstandings during wedding preparations, time constraints, and a lack of awareness among some participants. The facilitators addressed these challenges through an inclusive approach, storytelling, simple language, and participatory methods.
