Abstract

The digitalization of education has changed how students access information, interact with others, and experience learning. These changes have expanded learning opportunities while raising concerns related to digital distraction, the quality of social interaction, disparities in digital literacy, and students’ emotional and character development. This study examines holistic education as a framework for student development in digital learning environments and identifies the conditions that shape its implementation. A qualitative approach employing library research was used. Literature was retrieved through Google Scholar and ResearchGate, with the search focusing on publications from 2020 to 2025 addressing holistic education, digital education, student development, digital literacy, character education, and 21st-century skills. The selected literature was analyzed thematically to identify relationships among digital challenges, dimensions of student development, pedagogical practices, and implementation conditions. The findings indicate that holistic education provides a framework for considering intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual development in the use of educational technology. Its integration is particularly evident in learning practices that foster critical reasoning, collaboration, reflection, creativity, and responsible technology use. The synthesis further identifies three conditions that shape implementation: curricula oriented toward the development of the whole student, educators’ capacity to make pedagogical decisions concerning technology, and supportive institutional and policy environments. These findings position holistic education not as an addition to educational digitalization, but as a framework for determining the role of technology according to educational purposes and students’ developmental needs.
